
Photo is defined from a different point of view.
According to Azhar, “Photos is: illustration through an image that is almost
equal to the reality of what the object or situation”.[1]
Photo represents original form of two dimensions media. Photo represent
effective visual appliance because can be visualizing by something that will be
explained with concrete and realistic.
Photos have function, among other: (1) to arouse student’s motivation and interest, (2) to develop student’s language, (3) helping students interpret and remember the content of the lessons with regard to the photo page, (4) photos can be used in groups, especially to launch a discussion about the content of lesson.[2]
The characteristic of photos selection in learning
purposes, among other: (1) support the achievement of learning objectives, (2) artistic
quality, (3) sufficient clarity and size, (4) validity, (5) interesting.[3]
In addition, the characteristic of photo, among
other:
a.
Images that are used should indicate
what is being discussed or is being done.
b.
It should be noted the value of
photography. Pictures must be quite popular, where the image is well known by
the students in part or in its entirety.
c.
Photos must be dynamic which showed a
certain activity.
d.
Photos must carry the message that is
suitable for teaching purposes are being discussed.
In conclusion, in this case the teachers should
establish utility photos that are relatively appropriate, and select the
suitable photos for the specific purpose of teaching. From this point of view
there are two kinds of consideration, the first from the point of education and
the second from the point of art.
There are some principles that need to be use in use
photo as visual media in teaching activity, among other:[4]
a.
Use images for the purpose of a specific
lesson that is by selecting a specific photo that would support the explanation
of the main points of the lesson.
b.
Combine the photo to the lesson, because
the effectiveness of the use of photo in teaching-learning process needs the
integration.
c.
Just use a little photo, rather than use
a lot of photo but not effective.
d.
Decrease the addition of the words in
the photo, because the photo is actually very important in developing the
story, or in presenting new ideas.
e.
Encourage creative statement, by the photo;
the student will be encouraged to develop oral skill.
f.
Evaluating the progress of the class
after using photo media in teaching.
Thus, knowing these principles will make the
teacher focus in using photo media in learning process. By doing this
principle, the teacher can use photo media effectively in teaching. So, the
expectation to get an effective teaching by using photo media can reach
successfully.
